We asked aerialist and neo-burlesque performer, Empress Stah, about what burlesque means to her. Find out what influence she thinks the burlesque dancing revival has had.
Empress Stah
Because of burlesque… “This doesn’t apply to me but… there’s been a resurgence in the feminine which has provided a platform for many women to own and epxress that femininity and their sexuality through performance or dressing up as an audience member. I see that as a completely positive thing.
“I think there’s such a pressure for women to be equal and women have been able to realise an opportunity in immersing themselves in being feminine and girly. That’s what it is, women have been denied that for a few decades. In your career, you’ve got to be manly, be strong, but I’m a woman, I’m soft and I want to do traditional girls’ things – and burlesque fulfils that.”

Burlexe is a sensational London burlesque show inspired by the women who created the genre and perform the art. It fuses burlesque performance with storytelling, dancing with acting.
We look to burlesque dancers who perform on their own terms and Empress Stah is one such woman.
