OK, so truth hurts – but what else does truth do?
The recently departed Teena Marie would’ve celebrated her 55th birthday today.
Relatively unknown in the UK, she was however a Motown star breaking through in the disco era with tracks like ‘Behind The Groove’ and ‘I Need Your Lovin’’ before hitting it big in the US with the more mainstream ‘Lovergirl’ in the ‘80s.
After a lengthy sabbatical, she made a stunning comeback with some of her best material before her untimely death in 2010.
A true artist with a unique r’n’b voice, she spoke her spirituality through her work and through her struggles ensured better deals for artists. Her lawsuit against Motown resulted in ‘The Brockert Initiative’, making it illegal for a record label to keep an artist under contract without releasing new material for that artist.
She said, “It wasn’t something I set out to do. I just wanted to get away from Motown and have a good life.
“But it helped a lot of people, like Luther Vandross and the Mary Jane Girls and a lot of different artists, to be able to get out of their contracts.”
