The V&A Museum London and Ball Gown Beauty

Sometimes pretty things should be celebrated and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum are doing a spectacular display of 60 years worth of ball gown delights. The V&A Museum are calling it Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950.

Sixty dresses from six decades including ones by Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh. Expect latex, lace and more taffeta than one of Jordan’s weddings.

Co-curator Sonnet Stanfill said, “We really looked for things that showcased different couture techniques, different silhouettes and also of course, it had to be British.

“So, by culling through our permanent collection, we chose the pieces that we felt were the grandest examples. Most people are excited by the idea of a fairytale evening, of choosing a gown that shows their level of taste.”

Stanfill added, “One of the things I have really enjoyed working for on this show, is the notion of subversion. It’s more than just a dress, it’s that one element of surprise that I have really enjoyed discovering.

“British design, you think you know what it’s all about and then something comes along and upends your preconceived notions.”

The exhibition opened last Saturday and runs until January next year with images of gowns are also projected into the ceilings of each display cabinet.

Go, drink in the pretty and have an afternoon of glitz and glamour.
