We share our top tips for how to apply top eyeliner. These burlesque makeup basics can be the building blocks for any beauty look in any season.
We began by sharing our basic eye makeup tips for everyday perfection. Now we’re giving the top burlesque beauty tricks on how to apply top eyeliner.
Firstly, it’s all about practice and that begins with finding the perfect tools for you. Different people suit and prefer pencil eyeliner, pen, gel and liquid eyeliner.
Each of these ways to apply eyeliner has its benefits but it all comes down to personal preference. Gel eyeliner, for example, is good for smudging, whereas liquid is good for fine lines, whilst a pen is simple and relatively fuss-free. Pencil eyeliner, on the other hand, can be drawn thicker with ease.
Before applying eyeliner you need to put on your base. This can include primer, foundation and/or eyeshadow.
Begin by holding your eye taut to allow for a precise application. Then you draw from the inside of the eye straight to the end of the eye along where the eyelashes meet the eyelid.
This does take practice but first creating a dotted line and joining the dots can make it easier. Although we’ve all had days when applying eyeliner doesn’t quite go to plan, don’t let this deter you.

The simplest way to apply winged eyeliner is by first applying normally and adding an upward flick. When you close your eyes the top of the flick will look like it goes straight along from the top line.
You then draw diagonally upward from the bottom line to join the top. This image shows how simple it can be. For a video on how to apply eyeliner in this way again see our eye makeup tips.

There are lots of different shapes and sizes of eyes. Many people look to widen and emphasize their eyes one way to do this is with mascara, no falsies required.
Another way is by using tightlining which is when you put eyeliner on the inside of the upper eyelid. You can even use this when you don’t want to put eyeliner along the lash line. This is a great day time look and both techniques make eyes look bigger.
Likewise, using highlighting makeup can make eyes pop. Simply apply white eyeliner across the waterline of the bottom eyelid. Voilà.
It can also be difficult to draw winged eyeliner on hooded eyes. Luckily, there’s a video for that. Enjoy.
Here’s some tools to get you started, help you perfect your technique and to just plain cheat.
