A Jubilant Revue is the most talked about Dita Von Teese burlesque show of recent years and although it has now sadly come to a close, it’s made a slew of headlines and jaws drop during its residency over the past year.

The residency, A Jubilant Revue, was staged at the Horseshoe Las Vegas’s iconic Jubilee Theater and paid homage to Jubilee!, one of Vegas’s most famous revue shows on the Strip. Jubilee! was one of the last showgirl productions of its kind, which ran from 1981 to 2016.

I was a huge fan of the Jubilee!,” says Dita Von Teese. “I used to come to it all the time when I would come to Vegas. I loved the extravagance and opulence—the feathers and rhinestones. I mean, the costume budget alone was equivalent to $12 million!”

As you can see below, the new show was sumptuous to say the least and brings together the classic influences of the original show together with Dita’s unique performance pieces and much, much more.

So here’s a chance to enjoy it again, well, nearly, through the words of the iconic burlesque performer herself.

Dita on the Dita Von Teese burlesque show in Vegas

“I just wanted to make it the best burlesque show ever. It’s burlesque-meets-showgirl revue in Vegas, and it was always my intention to just make this a great show.”

“The act is full of strip-scapes that I created with my longtime partner, Catherine D’Lish, and so you have all my (original acts). You have all of my martini and champagne glasses all onstage at once, my giant powder compact, my carousel horses, my big, gilded shell–my Venus shell. It’s pretty much almost everything I ever did, done in a big way and with other performers doing the numbers under my direction.”

“My goal has always been about changing people’s minds, because there’s such a negative [idea] about striptease. I’m not trying to sanitize it: I love striptease. I love the idea you can have a sexy, frivolous show and it can be inspiring to people—especially when you see different types of body types and skin types. It’s celebrating glamour, sensuality, and eroticism and not apologizing for it.”

On the original inspiration, Jubilee

“Jubilee was my favourite thing to see in Vegas and so I feel I have a big responsibility. I want to respectfully utilise the best of Jubilee from a distinctive point of difference, merging it together with what I love about burlesque and what people know me for.“

On the diverse casting in the Dita Von Teese Burlesque Show

“It’s something I’ve always done in my touring shows. It just happened to be because I found that so many of the great burlesque performers are unique and different, and I wanted to change people’s minds about burlesque … I have two authentic burlesque performers in this Vegas show, but I also wanted to cast a lot of dancers. And I have to say, it’s not a thing in Vegas to cast for diversity, so it’s not even that easy to do. But I did it, of course. And it’s not just about body diversity, either. It’s about age diversity as well and that’s always been important to me, too, because I think it’s important that we see people going through different stages of life and feel like there is representation and that you can see beauty and sensuality in many forms, whether that’s body or age or gender—it’s all of it.”

On the outfits and costumes

“When I had dared to ask about the costumes from ‘Jubilee!’ and what they were doing — and whether I could add them to the show, they said, ‘Yes.’ It was kind of like I hit the glamour jackpot.”

“Usually I’m building a show that travels around the world and everything has to be made to travel. It’s amazing to be in one space—we don’t have to pack up every night and move on to the next city.

“I actually don’t think practically at all,” she laughs. “I’m usually like, ‘How do we make this more impractical? How do we make this more complicated?’ I’ve always been obsessed with the art of exquisite things that you would not see in real life.”

And finally on her Christian Louboutin shoes

“There’s a special Dita heel that they make for me. He builds out the back of the shoe, and it curves in dramatically towards the ball of my foot. It’s a super-curvaceous heel.”
