OK, you may be well over the MDNA Tour by now (unless it’s just rolling into your town Stateside) but here’s what it takes from a costuming point of view.
MDNA Costumes
Madonna, together with 22 back up dancers and singers, work 700 costumes with the assistance of 315,000 Swarovski Elements. All overseen by long-time stylist and two-time Oscar nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips.
Not only does Madonna’s stylist oversee everything but Queen Madge herself keeps a close eye on every costume design and material used.
This Swarovski video presents the Madonna MDNA Tour in Hyde Park, London on 17th July 2012. You’re taken backstage to peruse the beautifully ornate Swarovski creations.
The MDNA Tour is the first time that Swarovski encrusted heels have been used and their first time on stage. The chunky mosaic heels add some amazing glitter to each back up dancer and Madonna herself.
The most sparkling performance is undoubtedly ‘Vogue’. The top hats, riding crops and masks all shimmer and put that wow factor into every detail of the costuming. Even the chain mail seen in the MDNA London show used Swarovski loops.
The backstage crew refer to the decadent use of Swarovski as, “Show stoppers,” and said, “You can’t do without it.” Madonna even gives La burlesque dancer, Dita Von Teese’s Burlesque: Strip Strip Horray! revue a run for its money.
