Hurrah for World Burlesque Day 2022

Burlesque

World Burlesque Day has now become an institution, thanks to the stewardship, glamour and hard work of its creator Sapphira. And World Burlesque Day celebrates its third anniverary on 26th April 2022, the date of Gypsy Rose Lee’s death back in 1970.

WHAT IS WORLD BURLESQUE DAY?

World Burlesque Day unites the Burlesque community with performances, interviews and challenges to showcase the dance art form and what it means to artists across the globe. This year, founder Sapphira has released a new music track ‘Queen of the Scene’ to be the lead anthem and has launched a TikTok challenge to accompany the celebrations for all to get involved.

Established artists, hobbyists and newbies are all invited to join in the celebrations. Sapphira is an advocate for burlesque and for not giving up on your dreams. In burlesque as well as her music, she strives for inclusivity with age, gender/gender identity and expression, size or background.

She shares our beliefs that burlesque is for everyone, encouraging community over competition.

IMMODESTY BLAIZE: CERTIFICATE OF CONTRIBUTION

This year’s celebration also sees British icon and star, Immodesty Blaize confirming her participation and acceptance of the first World Burlesque Day Certificate of Contribution for her immense efforts raising burlesque worldwide.

Immodesty Blaize is Europe’s biggest burlesque star and a Las Vegas Burlesque Hall of Fame alumnus, having won the coveted ‘Queen of Burlesque’ title, alongside various other awards over her 20 year career.

Throughout April the World Burlesque Day team will be going live on Instagram with giveaways including books, costume items and free burlesque classes.

TAKE PART IN THE WORLD BURLESQUE DAY TIKTOK CHALLENGE

The #queenofthescene Tik Tok challenge, accompanied by its own catchy anthem ‘Queen of the Scene’ by Sapphira and Doc Moody, invites people to upload their own Queen of the Scene Tik Tok transformations to mark World Burlesque Day.

People can learn more about the challenge by downloading the World Burlesque Academy App and accessing a free ‘Queen of the Scene’ module.

“Queen Of the Scene is a song of celebration and a declaration about claiming one’s power. Everyone can claim their inner-queen and I wanted to create a challenge that captured the momentum of the previous dance challenges we have had. It is my hope we will unite even more people in a spirit of uplifting happiness. The past few years have been extremely difficult and dancing is a way to heal and escape. I wanted to show how diverse burlesque is and we choose performers for the video of all body types, ages and abilities.”
