Obviously, what she has done for the art form of burlesque is incomparable (and made her a millionaire into the bargain) but it’s Dita Von Teese quotes about body positivity that’s really made her such an icon – and championed across the burlesque scene.
It’s these quotes and insight on stardom, body and image that has helped elevate her to superstar status and beyond.
Here are a few of our favourite Dita von Teese quotes which really help to boost our self-esteem when we’re feeling a little off key.
Ignore the critics… Only mediocrity is safe from ridicule. Dare to be different! I’ve always loved the idea of not being what people expect me to be. Anyone who thinks that being young and beautiful is more important than having something to say is wrong. I make a point to never, ever point out my physical flaws… this is advice I give to women as often as I can. People don’t notice the things we see in ourselves that we hate, so why direct them to it?’ Everyone else can go ahead and live in their beige movie. I prefer mine in Technicolor. They might all look at me and they might talk about me and they might think I’m weird. And you know what I couldn’t possibly disappoint them. So let’s not. Instead, let’s show them how it’s done. I think it’s… kind of turning the old-fashioned ideas of feminism upside down. You can’t decide for someone what is degrading or empowering because some people could look at my show and say, ‘Oh, that’s so degrading to women” but then you’re thinking, “how is that degrading to women when there’s all the women who are supporting it and they’re getting inspiration from it and they’re happy to see a different version of sensuality!?’ ‘Find role models that you can actually aspire to look like instead and appreciate different types of beauty. I was a failed ballerina, so I found a way to satisfy my dreans and to be a performer. One of the great things about burlesque in the old days is that a lot of the major stars were like me – maybe they weren’t Ginger Rogers, but they could dance and they wanted it really bad, so they found a way to adapt accordingly. The combination of my love of glamour, my love of dance, my love of theatre, my love of style and fashion, it all sort of came together. Glamour is not about how young you are, or how rich you are, how pretty you are, what size you are, what ethnicity you are. Everyone can become glamorous if they choose to, put the time into it, and devote part of their selves to it. I like when people know who they are, know their limitations and what they want to do. It’s the same thing for me. People who follow all the rules and chase every trend tend to get forgotten – they look great, but they’re not as memorable.
