You may remember a certain orange haired, own eyelash making beautiful creature from the viral video vault of around 2010?
Ilona Royce Smithkin is now 91 years old, still making her own eyelashes and still creating art from colour, joy and life.
She said, “I’ve just come into my own quite late. I’m a late bloomer. You have no idea how insecure I was… I just didn’t believe in myself and now I know who I am.”
Having grown up in Poland then Nazi Germany, Ilona was last year interviewed by Dita Von Teese for Advanced Style’s new book.

The book Advanced Style by Ari Seth Cohen was launched this week in New York. A compilation from the blog, it’s an ode to the confidence, beauty and fashion that can only be achieved through the experience of a life lived glamorously.
It is a collection of street fashion unlike any seen before. It’s focused on the over-60 set in the world’s most stylish locales.
We’ve always been taught to respect our elders, these ladies deserve more than our respect… As senior fashionistas, artists, fun-lovers and optimists.
