Dita Von Teese Beauty Book

We’ve been talking about the Dita Von Teese beauty book for three years and it’s finally here! The wait is over and now Your Beauty Mark: The Ultimate Guide to Eccentric Glamour is available here.

Dita Von Teese talked to Popsugar about the burlesque dancer’s beauty bible. She said, “It’s been a book I’ve been working on for quite a while because I really want to lay out all my beauty secrets — like, everything I know.

“I go through the book and do all the makeup step-by-step and show exactly how I do it, and reveal every single beauty secret I can think of. I don’t use a glam squad or makeup and hair team when I’m on the red carpet, so really the message is about do-it-yourself glamour.

“I’m referencing and showing a lot of my inspirations, which are daring, eccentric women of the past, not necessarily classic American beauties with little perky noses.

“I’m really showing who the great beauties of history are for me, and it’s about embracing who you are and not feeling like you need to fit in or succumb to a modern, typical standard of beauty.

“My book is for people who want to have fun with makeup and try things differently.”

Beauty Inspiration

“I like to watch a lot of old movies. That always does it for me,” Dita Von Teese told E! Online.

“I always feel inspired by movies with beautiful, glamorous costumes. And I love musicals. I always go for those 1940s-era Technicolor films with big musical numbers.”

She also told Popsugar, “I’m inspired a lot by women who were notoriously not reliant on other people to create their glamour.

“So a few of those people would be Marlene Dietrich, because she had a big hand in creating her image and knew a lot about lighting, makeup and style. A lot of those great portraits of her she styled herself.

“I’m also inspired by a lot of the models from the 1950s, like [photographer] Irving Penn models.”

Luscious Lips

“I think red lipstick looks good on every woman,” Dita went on to tell E! Online.

“She just has to find the right red lipstick. I’m a big fan of a matte red lip because it’s easier to wear, and it’s always classic and always elegant.”

Speaking to Glamour she said, “Dior’s Dolce Vita, Guerlain’s Exces de RougeMakeup Store Devil and a really great one is Lipink. It’s like house paint! Bright, shiny red lips that will not leave their mark anywhere. That’s my go-to lipstick for a hot make-out session.”

She added, “I always line my lips completely with red, fill them in and then put the red lipstick over that. Then I go over the edges again with the lipliner to make it perfect.

“MAC Cherry or Beet are both great liners. As for lipstick, choose a matte lipstick if you’re worried about it fading. One I usually wear for all-day rehearsals is MAC Ruby Woo. That’s really the key to staying power with red lipstick, it’s that matte finish.”

Powder Puff Power

Her love of matte make up doesn’t end at her vermilion boarder. Dita Von Teese told E! Online, “I love like clear, beautiful, matte skin.” She shared, “It’s always an essential of retro-style makeup, I think. I like a powdered matte finish.”

Coaxing Cat Eyes

The LA burlesque dancer revealed to Glamour her top tip. She said, “Practice! Above all, practice. You know, I’ve been drawing cat-eye eyeliner for over 20 years. I’ve gotten better at it over the years and have noticed that after all these years of drawing it if I don’t do it for a week I can tell that I’m out of practice.

“I like to use a black gel eyeliner (MAC makes a good one called Blacktrack) with a very thin brush. I start small and then sometimes it gets bigger because I’m trying to get the two sides balanced. I’ll be wearing that cat-eye until I’m 90! I can’t imagine anything else. It’s part of me. I can’t live without it.”

Taking It Off

Dita Von Teese then had some advice for all you showgirls. She pointed out, “I wear a lot of heavy stage makeup as you may have noticed so I use a MAC makeup removing oil that I really like that emulsifies with water.

“When it comes to exfoliating, I usually just go for the good old washcloth and a soapy cleanser. I use a retinol a few times a week at night, but I have super sensitive skin so I have to be careful about how much of it I use.”

Dita Von Teese has also talked about why make up is important to her:
