Following the sad departure of burlesque legend, Dixie Evans, funds were raised by the burlesque community to support her medical costs and resting place. The goal has now been reached, just days before the final deadline.
On the 3rd August 2013, Dixie Evans sadly passed away. This famed burlesque dancer left her mark on the industry by creating the Burlesque Hall of Fame and the subsequent BHoF Weekender.
Last year Dixie Evans Week was organised to support Dixie Evans’ medical expenses on the week of her birthday. Following the sad news, the events went ahead to amazing success.
The You Care fundraising continued in the hope of attaining a crypt near the resting place of Marilyn Monroe. Unfortunately the one adjacent was already reserved for by Hugh Hefner in 1992, according to Los Angeles Magazine.
There were over 30 live burlesque performances and almost 100 burlesque classes conducted internationally for the event. The funds raised went towards outstanding medical bills and Dixie Evans’ memorial celebration, with the remainder going towards her final accommodations at the Westwood Cemetery.
Fans coveted a nearby site as Dixie Evans has been known as ‘The Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque’ since the 1950s. With the looming deadline of January 21st for $40,000, the target was in sight.
Now, the goal has been reached and it’s in no small part to the burlesque community who have tirelessly supported this great cause. The Burlesque Hall of Fame was originally envisioned as a way to aid burlesque dancers in their old age and that’s just what they have done.
The funds are now available for a case in the Westwood Cemetery Room of Prayer that will be accessible to fans, family and friends who wish to pay their respects. To everyone who supported this cause we salute you!
